The M.E.S.C. Master Course is designed to provide a 2-years (120 ECTS) education program in Materials Science and Electrochemistry within 5 universities in 3 European countries (France, Poland and Spain) that host world-renowned leading research laboratories in the field of Energy-Related Materials. Mandatory and optional courses have been integrated and will be taught by professors and researchers who already interact greatly through the European Research Network of Excellence ALISTORE, launched in January 2004. The Curriculum will ensure an intensive and innovative training for ~25 third-country + 15 European students. After completion of this Master, students will be able to apply for PhD programs in Europe and/or working as R&D engineer in industry.
The Master Course has been granted by the European Commission for the
Erasmus Mundus Program
which means that fellowships of 21000 Euros / Year will be granted by the Master Consortium
to ~25 selected third-country students (non-european)
Summary of the Curriculum
The 2-years Curriculum of the Master consists of three semesters of classes taught in English language only plus a 6-months research-training period as a Master thesis in a European Research Laboratory. Altogether, students will study in between two and four different European countries:
- 1st semester in France : Univ. Paul Sabatier (Toulouse) or Univ. of Provence (Marseille)
- 2nd semester in Poland : Warsaw Technical University
- 3rd semester in Spain (Univ. of Cordoba) or France (Univ. of Picardie, Amiens)
- 4th semester : Master thesis in one of the 16 laboratories of the NoE ALISTORE
The education curriculum covers mandatory courses taken by the whole class, which are core topics of the master degree : basics and fundamentals of electrochemistry, materials science, solid state chemistry and energy storage, materials technology and processing, electrochemical storage and conversion of energy, conducting polymers, synthesis of nanomaterials.
The optional units chosen in Semester 1 and 3 will give deeper insight into specialized matters, where the involved university groups have a world-leading expertise :
- Semester 1, Toulouse : specialization in Applied Materials Science for Battery applications
- Semester 1, Marseille : specialization in Materials Surfaces and Point Defects
- Semester 3, Amiens : specialization in Battery technology, assembly, tests and physical analysis
- Semester 3, Cordoba : specialization in Nano-Materials for energy applications
Degree awarded
After successful completion of the curriculum, students will graduate with a multiple Master degree in "Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion" awarded by the universities of the Consortium and recognised in each of the countries visited.

Admission Criteria
The admission criteria will be highly competitive as we intend to advertise this program among students of top leading universities from all over the world. To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor's degree in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Electrochemistry) or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Note that students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor's degrees are awarded before they enroll.
Besides usual evaluation of student's records such as GPA's, and TOEFL, applicants will have to explain their goals and interests in coming to Europe for education. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their prior performance and professional promise, as evidenced by their academic records and letters of evaluation from individuals familiar with their capabilities. As all the courses will be taught in English, students whose native language is not English must provide certificates of English proficiency prior to applying to the Master.
Selection Process
The Master’s Admissions Committee (at least one person from each of the five universities of the consortium) begins its assessment of applications as soon as they are complete. Applications will be automatically forwarded to each of the partners but none of the final decisions will be made until after the deadline (January 31st for E. Mundus applicants, June 30th for European applicants). Final student selection will be made during specific 2-day meetings organized by the head of the Master Pedagogic Committee. The selection will be made on the basis of the CV, the letters of motivation and recommendation and to ensure a good balance in terms of countries of origin of the whole class.
